Initial situation
The world is getting smarter and IoT is on the rise. The automatic registration of vehicles with RAIN® RFID is no exception. Whether Electronic Vehicle Registration (EVR), Electronic Toll Collection (ETC), Automated Vehicle Identification (AVI) or Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), every application requires highly accurate identification at maximum speed. To achieve this, communication between the reader and transponder, as well as between the reader and backend, must take place at the highest security level.
Solution
Kathrein Solutions is constantly developing its product portfolio to meet all these market requirements. Together with Tönnjes E.A.S.T., world market leader for secure vehicle identification, and NXP Semiconductors, world market leader for secure connectivity solutions for embedded applications, we have developed an end-to-end high-security solution for optimal detection of vehicles in the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF). Vehicles are equipped with a front and rear license plate (IDePLATE®), as well as a windshield transponder (IDeSTIX®), which serves as a "third license plate". Motorcycles have a license plate on the back and a headlamp tag (IDeSTIX easy HLT). All transponders contain a UCODE® DNA IC from NXP with 128-bit AES encryption technology. The vehicles can be identified by authorized readers mounted overhead in a gantry or toll plaza. Their identity is reliably authenticated via a secure end-to-end solution consisting of secure tags, secure readers and the secure backend. If a vehicle has an unauthorized license plate or the license plate data does not match the information on the sticker, an alarm is triggered. This ensures maximum security. It is almost impossible to misuse the windshield or headlight tag as it self-destructs when removed from the windshield. Special holographic features guarantee optical protection against counterfeiting.
Results
The contactless GS1 UHF RFID Gen2 v2.0 offers comprehensive identification and a cryptographic security implementation for tag authentication, which also works at top speeds of more than 200 km/h. This enables our customers and partners around the world to use an established, intelligent, secure and efficient solution.
