Challenge: For optimum supply chain transparency

The demand for Transparency in the wine supply chain is becoming increasingly important. Consumers' awareness of the products they buy and consume is growing, and with it the demand for detailed information about the entire wine production process. From the grape to the bottle, the supply chain must be traceable. To meet consumer demands, winemakers need to find the right solutions to meet these challenges. This can be achieved through the Use of the latest identification technologies be realized: Tracking & Tracing with solutions from Kathrein.

Background: Transparency in the supply chain: Ca' del Bosco

Ca' del Bosco is one of the most modern and advanced wineries in Italy and is known for its exceptional wines. The winery took up the challenge and realized that Improved use of technology in the company's own operations is essential was to meet the new market requirements. To achieve this, they turned to our Italian partner SAIT, a company specializing in RFID solutions. As part of the collaboration, a project was defined whose main objective was to, Implement a system that is capable of automatically tracking the entire production process and supply chainto implement the desired global model of traceability.

Solution: A transparent supply chain

The solution follows certain procedures during the winemaking process, starting with the registration of the vineyards in the system. The winemaker can trace the grape varieties back to the original vineyard. Within vineyards in the system. The winemaker can trace the grape varieties back to the original vineyard. Within the warehouse, loading and unloading is simplified by the use of RAIN RFID-tagged pallets, which identify and register the items they contain. This information is then forwarded to the appropriate processing operation. These basic features assist the customer during the complex process of vinification to accurately select the different musts and wine types that a particular recipe requires. Depending on the final product, the wines are transferred to different containers, tracked and identified with RAIN RFID labels. During the labelling phase, the bottle is given a unique ID through serialization, which enables its traceability outside the winery, within the supply chain and on the market, thus facilitating logistical processes.

Result: Perfection for the consumer

Thanks to the technological improvements, the Ca' del Bosco winery was able to overcome all the initial challenges and improve overall efficiency, accuracy and control throughout the supply chain:

  • Streamlining the production process
  • Traceability of the product throughout the entire manufacturing process
  • Monitoring and recording the results of analysis and quality control tests
  • Control of the gray market
  • Protecting the brand from counterfeiting
  • Guarantee promise to the customer regarding the credibility and authenticity of every bottle of Ca' del Bosco wine

The numerous applications of RAIN RFID technology enable future developments and implementations in the wine industry in the areas of production and logistics. This modern tracking & tracing method can also be used in marketing to highlight a carefully operating company. In addition, NFC tags can be used as a replacement for the existing QR code to enable clearer interaction with customers.

"Ca' Del Bosco - RFID for the Wine Industry" is shortlisted for the RFID Journal Awards "Best RFID Implementation in the Supply Chain".
