Zeppelin Rental relies on presence detection
The challenge
As one of the leading rental and construction logistics service providers, Zeppelin Rental offers its customers in construction, industry, trade, landscaping, the public sector and events customized solutions in the areas of rental, construction logistics, modular construction and construction site equipment. In the rental sector alone, the portfolio comprises more than 62,000 machines and devices at 120 rental stations, which are available for hire. The company is part of the Zeppelin Group.
Initial situation
Zeppelin Rental's objective was to sustainably optimize the paper-based manual check-out and check-in process for its rental equipment and to reduce process times and costs. By standardizing and automating the process, the aim was to ensure faster equipment availability on the one hand and to use resources and space more efficiently on the other.
Solution
"Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) uses electromagnetic waves to enable automated and contactless recording of rental equipment. The entire rental fleet was fitted with an active RFID tag for this purpose, and the rental stations were equipped with a corresponding Metratec infrastructure. Two outdoor receivers with a range of 150 m each and two indoor receivers with a range of around 35 m ensure presence detection of the premises and workshops at each location. The RFID tags are connected directly to Zeppelin Rental's ERP system via a driver. Each rental device is thus automatically recorded in real time in the scheduling system as soon as it arrives at the rental station.
Result
The investment in Kathrein CrossTalk technology leads to a significant increase in process efficiency in incoming and outgoing goods as well as in inventory. The employees in the rental stations are relieved of non-sales processes and use the time gained for an even more intensive exchange with customers. Thanks to the real-time recording of rental devices, customers also benefit from faster device availability. The real-time data is also a key success factor for web-based customer services such as online rental. Further projects are planned in which the use of CrossTalk will be evaluated.
