RFID runs like on rails

The challenge

Greek rail operator TrainOSE wants to increase efficiency by tracking the movement of freight trains from border stations through the entire rail network. To this end, the company has opted for a Kathrein RFID solution. With the help of Kathrein RFID products, TrainOSE carried out a test phase to create the basis for real-time tracking of around 4000 rail cars. The project was then implemented.

Initial situation

As a former subsidiary of the Greek State Railways (OSE), TrainOSE operates all passenger and freight trains on OSE's rail network. The rail operator also manages the leasing of OSE's own rolling stock. To be able to accurately map and improve logistics efficiency, TrainOSE needs a system that can track the movements of domestic and international freight trains from the border station in real time. The rail operator's key requirements for the system were optimized logistics planning and a better overview of network utilization.

Solution

A nationwide network of UHF readers has been installed along the TrainOSE rail network. The Kathrein RFID RRU4 readers with 70° wide-range antennas work perfectly - even at very high temperatures. They reliably identify and register each individual train, regardless of its speed, thus guaranteeing maximum transparency. In total, more than 40 network nodes with more than 150 identification points have been set up. In order to create a centralized pool for all data with time stamp, ID and status, the RFID readers were intelligently connected to the backend - either wirelessly via WLAN bridges or via LAN cables.

Result

Kathrein's solution fully meets the customer's requirements. Data can be generated, analyzed, filtered and temporarily stored in real time in the event of network failures. By using the intelligent Kathrein RFID software, decisions on planning and process reliability can now be made faster and more reliably. This leads to significant increases in efficiency and optimal logistics planning along the entire value chain.
