ITS certification test for multi-lane free flow (MLFF) applications

As part of a comprehensive ITS certification test at Eberswalde Airport near Berlin, Kathrein readers and antennas, as well as newly developed high-security transponder systems, were thoroughly tested for performance and subsequently certified by an external testing institute.

The following scenarios were tested:

  • Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) with RFID gantry
  • Single-Lane Free Flow (SLFF) with RFID gantry
  • Multi-Lane Free Flow with RFID InLane reader

Proven ITS readers such as the RRU 7700 and RRU 7800 were used. However, the focus was on new, optimized antenna configurations based on WiRa 40° PRO and WiRa 25° 35° PRO and their functionality in modern ITS scenarios such as multi-lane free flow (MLFF) toll systems. Part of the validation process also included a new generation of security transponders that can be reliably detected, especially at driving speeds of up to 200 km/h.

Testing the InLane reader at different speeds and in different traffic scenarios

The InLane Reader can be installed completely below the road surface and is optimized for reading license plates with integrated transponders, such as IDePLates®.

During ITS testing in Eberswalde-Finow near Berlin, the performance of the InLane reader was evaluated under various speeds and traffic scenarios. Equipped with an integrated antenna that can selectively switch between orthogonally aligned beams in four directions, the device proved to be effective not only in detecting passing vehicles, but also in determining their direction of travel.
