Record the flow of goods in real time
The challenge
The manufacturer of sanitary products is asserting itself as an innovation leader in production and logistics. Its aim is to use RFID radio tags within a Kanban process. The pilot project gives the manufacturer a head start in development with the aim of being able to track the flow of goods across the company in real time.
Initial situation
The existing Kanban process between the production of a plant and the dispatch center is to be supported for the first time with the new wireless technology. Contactless identification and localization via radio technology is to be used in production practice. The project is intended to stimulate demand for RFID-supported processes both within the manufacturer and externally.
Solution
After reviewing several solution providers, the choice fell on RFID applications from SAP. With the help of SAP consultants and RFID specialists, SAP Auto-ID Infrastructure was implemented in an SAP ramp-up project. The SAP solution maps the Kanban process for all finished products manufactured in the plant. Each of the 4,000 identification cards in circulation here was given a radio chip. Gate-like readers recognize the goods when they leave production in pallet cages. The cards of the emptied boxes are recorded in tunnel-like RFID readers. Even stacks with dozens of cards can be identified in a fraction of a second in a single scanning process. SAP Auto-ID Infrastructure is linked to the production planning and material management functional areas of SAP ERP. The software translates the scanned chip data into meaningful business information.
Result
Higher production quality and fewer operational errors. Time and effort for manual recording and control work are saved. The project gave the manufacturer a significant head start in development. More readers would seamlessly record production and logistics processes, for example. There would also be advantages for retailers. The radio chips could be physically merged with end products to form a single unit and could also be fed with more information than before. SAP software enables added value through a wide range of RFID applications.
