Case Study | Access control in a ski resort
Axess, the leading provider of access solutions in ski resorts, has developed an innovative RFID technology in collaboration with Kathrein Solutions to increase security and convenience and reduce check-in times. This solution allows ski passes to be scanned over longer distances, improving the skiing experience by eliminating the need for manual checks and optimizing throughput at access points.

Challenge: Ski tourism is quality and quantity at the same time
As a global supplier to ski resorts in the area of access control, Axess is a market leader. From this position, the company aims to optimize processes technologically. The challenge lies in the permanent increase in safety and comfort (quality) and one faster processing (quantity). The focus here must always be on user behavior. A cold and highly frequented environment has a major impact on process reliability. In order to shorten access times, Axess strives to use the latest technological possibilities. The aim was to enable a smooth throughput. This smooth process should be independent of the skier's behavior and the position of the chip card. be.
Initial situation: IoT solutions were not available
Almost all access points and turnstiles in ski resorts around the world work with the same HF technology. The customer receives a ski pass the size of a credit card. This must be are actively held against a reader at the entranceto authenticate themselves. The active, albeit minimal, participation of the skier is often the reason for long waiting times. In particular, the sum of many short delays results in long queues when there are large crowds.
Solution: RFID transponder
Together with Axess, a UHF RFID transponder was developed for the ski pass that works without interference in a very wet environment and with extreme temperature fluctuations. The corresponding counterpart of the IoT solution, a UHF RFID reader module and special UHF RFID antennas, was installed in the Axess modules. This allows Every ski pass scanned, even over long distances become. At the same time, however, this is only selectively directly at the gate or at the turnstile possible. As the basis for the IoT solution, initial tests were carried out with our RRU 4500 RFID reader and a setup with Kathrein Solutions SmartShelf antennas made. Once the functionality had been successfully validated, the reader module and antennas for the Axess modules were customized. As part of this development, Kathrein Solutions has developed a RFID transponder antenna specially designed for ski resorts which was implemented in the new chip cards.
Result: IoT solutions increase quality and quantity in ski resorts
Through dhe UHF RFID technology vThe Kathrein Solutions system reliably registers all skiers. The position of the chip card does not have to be actively changed by the skier as before. The Throughput times at the entrances have been reduced many times over and a Smooth operation and safety are guaranteed. The modern IoT solution eliminates the need for manual checks for the operator. The combination of HF and UHF antennas in the systems has also created an efficient way for operators to carry out the technology change smoothly and profitably. The resources were used optimally and make the skiing experience more comfortable for everyone. Together with Axess, a Smart and innovative IoT solution with technological perfection into action.
