The Boyne Resort Group has tapped Axess to provide their first UHF gate installation, at the Group’s Cypress Mountain Ski Resort near Vancouver.

The eight gates installed provide fast, efficient and hands-free access to the ski resort with a new UHF technology. The AX500 Smart Gates have a special UHF antenna that only detects and reads the chip card within the two antennas. UHF has a wide read range, so special restrictions on the UHF field within the gate area create a precise read of the individual skier’s pass. Prior to this development, it was difficult to read chips in the area with precision due to the wide read range of UHF. At the lifts that don’t have gate installations, Cypress staff utilize three Axess 600 Handhelds with UHF readers to check for valid ski passes. The Axess hardware solution was connected to the resort’s POS provider Siriusware through a special interface.

The Axess UHF solution was created in cooperation with the company Kathrein, as part of the FFG funding project. This system is part of the Frontrunner Initiative, and was submitted under the title: “System for locating and validating UHF RFID transponders in person access control”.
